FMCSA
New MC Authority Checklist
June 26, 2026 6 min readBy Flow Fleet Solutions

Getting your own operating authority unlocks higher earnings, but the FMCSA process has many steps. Here is the checklist.
The essentials
Apply for your USDOT and MC numbers, file your BOC-3 process agent designation, register for UCR, and secure the required insurance filings (BMC-91). You will also need an EIN and to set up your IRP and IFTA if running interstate.
The waiting period
FMCSA requires a 21-day vetting period after your application is published. Use this time to set up factoring, ELDs, and your safety program so you can roll the moment you are active.
Mistakes in this process can delay your authority for weeks. Guidance from an experienced team keeps the timeline tight.
