Reefer vs Dry Van Profitability

Carriers often ask whether reefer or dry van is more profitable. The answer depends on more than just the rate per mile.
Reefer upside
Refrigerated freight generally commands higher rates, especially during produce season and for protein and pharma loads. Demand is steady year-round across food supply chains.
Reefer costs
That premium comes with extra fuel for the reefer unit, maintenance, washouts, and stricter temperature and detention requirements. Margins can still be excellent with the right dispatcher managing lanes and detention pay.
Dry van simplicity
Dry van has lower operating costs and the most available freight, making it easier to stay loaded. Rates are lower but so are the headaches. The best choice depends on your equipment, lanes, and tolerance for complexity.
